The Nicolae Bălcescu Land Forces Academy in Sibiu organized a joint module on the Law of Armed Conflict between April 7th and 11th, in which students from our institution and students from Italy, Greece, and Georgia participated.
Within the module, national and international experts gave lectures, and practical activities were held to consolidate the participants' theoretical knowledge.
We would like to thank all the participants and collaborators who intervened during the course: Major Dan Cîrstea, Chief Legal Advisor of the Multinational Corps South-East Command in Sibiu, who provided an operational perspective on international law and the rules of engagement, Professor Adamidis Polykapros, from the Hellenic Military Academy, who addressed the means and methods of warfare and the protection of persons and property during armed conflicts, Mrs. Raluca Morar, Director of the Red Cross, Sibiu branch, who discussed the role of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in promoting and supporting international humanitarian law.
One of the most anticipated moments of the course was the practical exercise "Raid Cross", which took place at the DAIA training ground. This role-playing game was based on a scenario that simulated a conflict in a fictional region, allowing participants to practically apply the concepts learned: the treatment of prisoners of war, humanitarian actions, the distinction between military and civilian objectives, and the responsibilities of commanders.
A team coordinated by Assist. Prof. Alin Bodescu, PhD, from the Nicolae Bălcescu Land Forces Academy in Sibiu, facilitated the exercise. The team consisted of Assoc. Prof. Marius Păunescu, PhD from the Carol I National University, Assoc. Prof.Sergiu Berindea, PhD from the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, student Ana-Maria Edu, from the Faculty of Law of the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, and Ms. Bianca Iamandei from the Romanian Red Cross in Bucharest.
This course was an integrated educational experience, combining theoretical lectures with practical activities and interactive discussions. It was designed to prepare participants for the current and future challenges of the Law of Armed Conflict.
